The Daily Artists of 2023

Daily Artists share about their arts practices and processes in their new gallery exhibit.

The vibrant and compelling artwork on display in the Artistree Gallery this January gives visitors a refreshing lift out of winter's cold and damp. A quick wander through the gallery rooms, though, lets us know that this is no ordinary art show. While most exhibits present the products of an artist's work, this show reveals evidence of each artist's process as well.

Welcome to the Daily Artists of 2023! Forty-five people joined together last year and made a commitment to be creative every day from February through December. They got support from one another at monthly meetings, where different participants shared what they were working on, or offered art process demonstrations, or attended a critique.

"Sharing your work is optional," says Deborah Goodwin, Exhibits Coordinator at Artistree. "The commitment to make art daily is a personal commitment."  Deborah facilitates the Daily Artists group each year and is also a participant herself. "It's so inspiring to work with this group of artists! You don't have to be a professional artist to belong. It's for anyone who wants to develop their work, studio practice, or just be with other artists."

"It's such a great program," remarks Patrick Fultz, one of this year's 21 exhibitors. "It's always great to be around people who have a creative mind, can understand your struggles and help you. As artists we're always doubting ourselves." Patrick, a group member for several years, explains that, in the beginning, he didn't participate much, but now he has more time on his hands and the group support and daily schedule have helped him expand his own art practice.

Back in the gallery, the personal statements on display from each exhibiting artist echo Patrick's words. Many express appreciation for the organization, structure, inspiration, and nurturance provided by the Daily Artists group and for Deborah and her co-gallerist, Azusa Mihara. "I feel blessed to be part of a fantastic group of artists who produce some astonishing works of art," writes Kathryn Peterson. The year-long process of creating is made clear by the pages and pages of sketchbooks and journals that accompany the finished artwork in the exhibit. Some artists share their notes, quick sketches, and other samples from their daily practice; others speak about their journey in their statements. This peek into the working world of the artist truly captures the spirit of the Daily Artists program at Artistree.

The exhibit is open through February 10.
