As the year draws to a close, we want to share a story with you.
Meet Molly Thompson.
When potter and graduate student Molly first came to Artistree, she found more than a ceramics class--she found a community that truly understood what “accessibility” means.
Molly, a disabled artist, writes in her recently published paper for the City University of New York:
“Artistree Community Arts Center of Pomfret, VT welcomes artists of every age...and with that a wide range of ability levels. Its staff members are no strangers to enthusiastically accommodating a wide variety of needs in a wide variety of mediums.”
In our pottery studios, instructors like Fiona and Deborah exemplify that spirit every day--meeting each student where they are, breaking down projects into approachable steps, offering verbal, visual, and tactile guidance, and creating what Molly calls a “dance between the student asking for help and the instructor noticing that they are struggling.”
This individualized, human-centered approach isn’t just about making art. It’s about building confidence, belonging, and joy. As Molly wrote:
“Artistree overall is a privilege to be at, with its dedicated staff and its low prices which solve accessibility issues on multiple fronts. Not every studio is as adaptive and affordable.”
At Artistree, we believe everyone deserves access to creative expression--regardless of age, ability, or financial circumstance. But keeping our programs adaptive, inclusive, and affordable (including scholarships!) depends on community support.
