Thinking Outside the Wheel
The potter’s wheel is a powerful tool, but it is only one of many ways to make pots. In this class, we will learn hand-building techniques to create functional ware for baking and serving. We will work with the slab roller, with slump- and hump- molds, with the extruder, and yes, with the wheel, to make class projects such as platters, bowls, baking dishes, and serving pieces like butter dishes. Previous ceramics experience is really helpful, but not entirely necessary.
Deborah Goodwin has a BFA in ceramics and sculpture from Denison University, where she also studied art history and worked in the college gallery. After college, she began working in the fashion industry, first in display and retail management, then as a buyer, and finally as a successful designer and manufacturer. Upon moving to Vermont in 2007, she resumed working as an artist, making soft sculpture pillows and hand-built ceramics.
In 2019, after 5 years of producing her ceramics during Artistree's open studios and teaching a workshop or two, Deborah joined the Artistree staff as Exhibits Coordinator. She enthusiastically develops and installs exhibits that share the fantastic talents of our area's artists with the community.
