The Sky Blue Boys & Cookie at the HayLoft!
Variety is the hallmark of The Sky Blue Boys & Cookie: part old-timey, part folk, and part bluegrass - but mostly unpredictable. Dan and Willy continue to utilize a stage full of acoustic instruments to deliver high-energy, time-traveling performances that are fun, interesting, and always well-received. They spice up their repertoire with material borrowed from a long list of celebrated performers, including Les Paul, Bill Monroe, the Everly Brothers, Don Williams, Jesse Winchester, and others. And now Carrie Cook, a well-known veteran of several popular Vermont ensembles, further expands the repertoire through her experience with folk, blues, swing, and jug band styles.
Willy and Dan have played together for decades. They formed the celebrated Vermont bluegrass band Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys in 1972 and have toured and recorded extensively in that context, as well as sitting in on shows and recording sessions for many of the region’s top acoustic musicians. But never far from their hearts were the sounds they learned to love long ago – the simple moving sounds of the early “brothers duets.”
Carrie Cook ("Cookie") brought her talents to The Sky Blue Boys for a few shows in 2017, and it clicked!
"We'd been thinking of adding a bass because with some venues, no matter how solid the music is, an acoustic duo isn't a big enough sound," says Dan. "A bass fills that bottom register and boosts the rhythm, while Carrie's distinctive voice expands our vocal range and options."
"Cookie" more than filled the bill. A lifelong bassist who played with the New York All-state Orchestra at age 16, she grew up surrounded by music, learning jazz from her father, classical music from her mother, and rural acoustic styles from her uncles. She played with Pete Seger on his storied sloop, the Clearwater, and in Vermont, appears regularly on the infamous Groundhog Opry as well as Cookie's Hot Club, Steady Betty and Girls' Night Out. Now she's found another home with The Sky Blue Boys & Cookie.
