Clay for Kids (5-8)

Hand build your own project from start to finish, exploring glazing and decorating options.

This class introduces and develops basic hand building techniques of pinch, coil and slab. Each session offers a different theme, and each week children will be led through a project and will also have time to realize their own creations. Pieces will be fired and glazed.

Fiona Davis, Ceramics Director, was born and educated in the UK, where she studied early childhood education and development. She immigrated to the United States with her husband and moved to Vermont in 1988. Fiona first took pottery with Jenny Swanson and worked with her at the League of NH Craftsmen and later at Dartmouth College’s Ceramic Workshops. Fiona was apprenticed to Miranda Thomas at her workshop in Quechee and followed her to Bridgewater, VT, where she worked alongside Ara Cardew. During this time she taught at the ArtPost, started by Caroline Bardos. Fiona came to ArtisTree in 2012 to begin the ceramics program and to help provide outreach opportunities to different communities within the Upper Valley.

Lisa Kaija, ArtisTree Staff, received her BA in Art History at Dartmouth College and her K-6 General Education/Visual Arts teaching certification through the Upper Valley Teacher Institute. During the last thirty years, she taught all subjects in grades K-4 and some subjects in grade 5-6 in various Upper Valley public and private schools. She has trained mid-life career changers to become teachers and raised five children with her husband, Kevin. Lisa revels in teaching art. The question she dodges most often is “Are you an artist?,” since she considers herself a teacher first and an artist second, and elementary art teachers need to know a little about a lot of different art forms. She thrives on challenges and enjoys being creative with people of any age.
