Artist’s Toolbox: Dry Media in Drawing

Learn simple techniques, explore new materials, and see how dry media can be transformed with creative mixed media techniques.

Join us for this introductory survey of drawing materials where you will have the opportunity to get your hands dirty and experiment. Enjoy the tactile experience of applying chalk, charcoal, conte, pencil and more to a variety of surfaces. Learn some simple techniques, try out new materials, see how traditional dry media is transformed with creative mixed media techniques, and learn how to store and preserve your work. All skill levels welcome.

This class is the last of four in this winter’s Artist’s Toolbox series. Each workshop in the series will focus on a different combination of media in drawing: dry media, wet media, color, and mixed media. Throughout the series we will push our drawing, stretch our creativity, and grow as artists. The spirit of this series is experimental, playful, and interactive. Join us for all four days or sign up for the classes that interest you. Feel free to bring your own materials if you like, especially ones that you may have been hanging onto but hesitating to try.

Teal Emlyn Sallen is a 2D artist specializing in drawing, painting, printmaking, and mixed media. She earned her BFA in Printmaking at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2006. Teal’s style is representational and narrative, with a touch of magic and whimsy, and shows the artist’s enjoyment of light and color. Rather than generating a body of work in a single medium, Teal happily explores multiple ideas through print, paint, and pastel. Her curiosity about the human, the natural, and the fanciful can also be observed as a common thread in her diverse collection of work. To learn more about Teal, visit her website.
